Today started by being picked up at 8am after our normal breakfast. I had slept really well except for when Katie turned the light on at 4.30am !! She says I was snoring and she had tried shouting at me so tried turning the light on which had worked.
By 8.30am we had got to the balloon ride to see Angkor Wat by air but it was so hot and misty they had called it off. I hope to try again later today or tomorrow.
It was certainly the hottest day so far even by 8.30am it was hot.
Today was our last day of temple pass – note to self never laminate your pass they get worried you have changed your photo on it and take ages speaking to security.
We visited Ta Prohm temple famous for being used in the Lara croft tomb raider film. There was a beautiful small temple just outside Ta Prohm.
Ta Prohm was built in 1186 and translates as ‘royal monastery’ which is what it was used for. With its out buildings as well over 12,500 people lived there. Much of the temple has been consumed by the jungle and a only minimum has been restored. It took nearly 80,000 people for it’s upkeep when it was in use. We know this from the wall carvings around the temple.
The trees that are consuming the temple are mainly silk cotton trees and aptly named strangler fig. Unfortunately the trees are so entwined with the structure of the temple that should they die most of the temple will be collapse. In recent years a very large tree was struck by lightening and took down 1 of the outer galleries(coridors).
It was so much fun exploring the old temple even though it is not as old as some of the others it was more mystical because of the trees entangled in the temple and because it had not been fully renovated.
Some parts had been rebuilt like one of the coridors which originally ran the full external of the temple.

Katie then took me on a jungle trek to the north gate, along a beautiful old wall and to a stone gate where there were no tourists it was so peaceful.
